About

Harold Dean James was born and raised in Alameda, California. He lived there until the ripe old age of thirty and then moved to New York City.

And then…

Starting off as an actor, Harold has performed in over 70 stage staging’s of classic, contemporary and musical productions. He studied acting with Uta Hagen, Earl Hyman and Sande Shurin.

His dream of getting into a Broadway show materialized with the 1989 production of Mastergate, written by Larry Gelbart. His true calling came a few years later when he wrote What Happened to Me and it was produced at Dance Theater Workshop in 1992. Harold was awarded a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts for that show and his next show, X Train, was reviewed as one of the best Off Off Broadway shows of 1993.

Since then Mr. James founded We Three Productions which was responsible for creating a reading series for poetry and prose  writers that lasted twenty-two years in the East Village of New York City. Also, We Three Productions has co-produced 6 full length plays and 1 musical at La MaMa ETC, 1 full length play at Dance Theater Workshop, 2 short plays at Ensemble Studio Theatre and an evening of 6 short plays at The Players. We Three Productions has also produced a short film based on one of his short plays, one full length play in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and an evening of short plays.

Since 2019, Harold has moved back to California and resides in the city he grew up in. He spends most of his time writing, enjoying the flowers in his backyard and listening to the wild turkeys that live on his block.
